Drycleaning Institute Launches
Hanger
Recycling Program
Reduce Waste by 10 Million Hangers, 300 Tons of Steel
Drycleaning customers nationwide are helping reduce the number of hangers that go into the nation's already-stressed landfills. It's as simple as bundling used hangers and taking them to a participating DLI Cleaners Care facility. The cleaner will recycle unusable hangers with a local scrap agent.
The goal is to see 10 million fewer
hangers go to landfills in 2012. Cleaners participating in the Drycleaning
& Laundry Institute's DLI Cleaners Care Hanger Recycling Program can make
it happen but only with help from their communities. The new program spans the
United States and asks consumers to reduce waste by bringing hangers to their
local DLI Cleaners Care drycleaner.
As of January 18, more than 200 cleaners pledged to keep more than four million hangers out of the nation's landfills.
"We know that many drycleaners already recycle hangers. It just makes good sense to do so," said Jon Meijer, DLI Membership Director. "Now we're asking cleaners to track the number of hangers they reuse or recycle and report it as part of this program. By working together and tracking our results we can monitor the program's contribution to a greener planet."
Participating drycleaners offer an estimated pledge of the number of hangers they will keep from the landfills. They track the actual number of hangers by estimated count and the scrap by weight. Cleaners will report recycling numbers to the Institute for inclusion in the DLI Cleaners Care Hanger Recycling Program's grand total.
"This program is designed to help the environment, customers, and cleaners," said DLI CEO Mary Scalco. "2012 is our first year with this program and we're shooting for 10 million fewer hangers in landfills. That's 300 tons of steel. We want to see that number grow as awareness of the program spreads."
DLI Cleaners Care is actively seeking
community groups such as scouts, schools, or religious institutions to
participate. To find your local DLI Cleaners Care participant, enter your zip code under "Find a Cleaner" and look for the DLI Cleaners Care logo.
