December 6, 2011 - School of Drycleaning Technology Hits the Road

The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute’s School of Drycleaning Technology heads to the home of Mickey Mouse in Anaheim, California to teach its Introduction to Drycleaning course January 23-27. The class is the full version of the one-week Introduction to Drycleaning Course. The only difference is it won't be held at DLI's school in Laurel, Maryland.
Teaching the course in the field offers plant owners the opportunity to send their employees to the class without having to pay expensive airfares, hotel accommodations, or even have them have to leave their families to learn the basics of the drycleaning business.
"We're very excited about offering this course in the field," said Brian Johnson, DLI's Director of Education & Analysis. "Members have mentioned how challenging it can be to get away to the DLI School. Now we're coming to you. We're currently working on several other locations."
Basics of Cleaning, Spotting and More
The course provides an understanding for completing many tasks in the drycleaning business. From sorting loads to pressing cleaned garments and all points in-between, students will walk away better prepared to handle the hurdles of daily life in a drycleaning plant.
Take stain removal for example. Spotting is much more involved than following a set of instructions on how to get out, say, a grass stain. Johnson teaches the thought process behind proper stain removal. "What type of stain is it? What caused it? What is the most effective way to remove that stain? What type of fabric is it on? Is the type of stain removal agent I'm considering damage the fabric? All these things are very important to doing proper stain removal," Johnson said.
"We give examples of common stains but that's nothing compared to knowing how to remove virtually any stain just by being able to figure out what caused it," Johnson said. The same is true for all other facets of the cleaning process taught by DLI.
The One Week Introduction to Drycleaning course is geared toward providing individuals with a solid foundation for professional cleaning. It is ideal for people who are new to the industry. The course covers the basics, including:
- Sorting loads for drycleaning
- Cleaning garments, including silk, satin, and more
- Operating a drycleaning machine
· Removing stains, including coffee, ink, grease and more
- Pressing pants, coats and skirts
- Using tensioning equipment to improve finishing quality
The course is $995 for DLI and CCA members and counts toward 10 Seal of Approval points. Non-members pay $1,495.
